System Center Service Manager 2012 R2 in Microsoft R2 Preview Whitepaper

In the last several years I've seen System Center Service Manager (SCSM) deliver in amazing ways for my customers.  We've been able to deliver visibility, process improvement, and automation by using Service Manager as the platform through which we manage IT.  The experiences we've had have ranged from large multi-national organizations, large datacenters, and smaller IT shops with specific end user needs.  This week Microsoft announced System Center 2012 R2 which is very much about providing enterprise-class private and public cloud capabilities, both from execution and management.  This is articulated in the following diagram, which puts in an effective way what Microsoft sees as its "all up" strategy.     2013-06-04 15_24_06-System_Center_2012 R2_Overview_White_Paper (1)   In this space, Microsoft has positioned Service Manager as a key component in the overall management story.  Service Manager is your CMDB and your IT process management engine whether you are on-premise, or in the cloud.   Here are the focuses that are articulated in the System Center 2012 R2 Microsoft document HERE and which have been publicly announced:  
  • Cloud Services Management Pack and Price Sheets.  This release (WSSC 2012 R2 in general) seems to be very much about public and private cloud, so it makes sense that this would be a focus, such as "also enabling faster deployments of System Center by providing service templates and runbooks for multiple components such as Service Manager, Data Protection Manager, and Operations Manager."  This provides price integration going forward, such as what you've come to experience in the current Cloud Services Management Pack with updates for Windows Server 2012 R2 and VMM 2012 R2. 
  • Workflows and CMDB.  In the document Microsoft talks about Service Manager's placement as the CMDB and work process engine for cloud management, which makes sense, since it is the aggregation point for all of the data sources. The document says, "Service Manager provides industry standard service management processes, including incident management, problem management, change management and release management to assure predictable service delivery. Service Manager provides a Configuration Management Database (CMDB), which offers a single repository to captures the relationships across infrastructure and applications, thereby facilitating change management and associated risk mitigation."
