System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1 Install Notes

Author by Matt Herman

I encountered a couple issues installing the new service pack today and wanted to pass them on for your installation. First, make sure you read Mike Griswold’s blog. It will clarify what update to run and in what order. If you don’t follow the proper order, you will get an error message indicating you don’t have local administrator rights on the system, which is frustrating because it really doesn’t point you in the right direction to resolve the issue. Once you are starting with the correct update, the install is familiar to previous updates. My only other problem came with how the install log and wizard report the progress of the installation. Almost an hour into the install, this is what I was looking at.

The log file indicates the install is complete, but the components indicate they are not done. Over the next 45 minutes, the components finished updating and new entries appeared in the log. I waited another 15 minutes for processes to normalize and for CPU usage to level out before restarting the server. After the restart, the updated site ran normally. The times will vary based on the speed of your server, but make sure you wait for everything to complete before restarting your server or assuming the update is complete. If you encounter anything unique in your site update, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
