Installing FAST Search for SharePoint 2010

Combining the power of FAST with the simplicity of SharePoint, FAST Search for SharePoint delivers an exceptional intranet and people search experience and a platform for building custom search-driven applications. This will be a series of blog posts covering how to install FAST Search.

Quick Links to the Entire Guide

  1. Installing the FAST Prerequisites and Binaries
  2. Creating the XML File
  3. Configuring the FAST Admin Node
  4. Configuring the FAST Non-Admin Node
  5. Creating the FAST Search Content SSA
  6. Creating the FAST Search Query SSA

Before Getting Started

Before you get started setting up FAST Search for SharePoint 2010 there are a few things you must do first.

1. Create a domain account for running FAST Search. This account must have the following permissions:

  • Must be a domain account
  • Must be a local admin on the FAST machines
  • Must have the SQL dbcreator and public roles
  • Must be a Managed Account in SharePoint

2. There are a few software requirements to check as well.

  • FAST search must be installed on Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and fully updated
  • FAST search should NOT be installed on the same server as SharePoint 2010
  • Make sure you are using static IPs
  • Configure the anti-virus so that it does NOT scan the files in FASTSearchbin*
  • Enable PowerShell scripts to run. You can do so by opening PowerShell as the admin and entering the command: Set-Execution Policy RemoteSigned. Then enter Y for yes
Next Step: Installing the FAST Prerequisites and Binaries

Hi Duncan, great blog series on the installation of Fast Search for SP!
Question: in the MOSS 2007 Search, there was this famous index file that would get built on the crawl server and then get propagated to the query servers. Is there such a thing as a physical index file in Fast Search? In other words, for the SharePoint server who will act as the Fast Search Query SSA, do we have to plan for extra disk space for a physical index file?
I’m pretty certain that this isn’t the case since there is a crawl db.
    Can you confirm?

Question : We have FAST installation of two nodes(admin and backup node).

We were ablet ocrawl the contents successfully but unable to find any results in results page.

    observations :

FAST services are running in both the FAST nodes.
Checked the crawl and scope rules.
checked disk space and found enough space.
indexer status shows running and heart beat also running.
I can see huge number in Non indexed count.

Kindly let me know how can i make it indexed.

    Plz help.

    Thanks
